Vascular and Endovascular Surgery

University Heart has the largest vascular surgery group in the state, and we treat patients with diseases of the arteries and veins, with a special interest in minimally invasive, catheter-based endovascular surgery for peripheral vascular disease (PVD) and aneurysmal disease. Vessels carrying blood to the heart can be impacted by plaque, cholesterol, and disease, but blockages can affect more than coronary arteries. Arteries also carry blood away from the heart, so blockages can occur in all arteries with serious effects.

Advancements provide options for what were once high-risk surgeries requiring large incisions. For example, thoracic aorta disease treatments now involve implanting an endoprosthesis stent, a much less invasive procedure for aneurysm patients.

In addition to skilled surgeons, UMMC resources include Mississippi’s only state-of-the-art hybrid endovascular suite with around-the-clock staffing for scheduled and emergency cases. We also have a comprehensive ultrasound imaging and blood flow analysis laboratory at University Hospital and the outpatient University Physicians Pavilion clinic.
